Free Doughnuts! (or is it Donuts? Why can’t we all just get along and agree on one spelling?)

4 06 2009

Free Doughnuts tomorrow!  Why?  Where?  How?  National Doughnut Day!  (and people wonder why we’re the fattest nation of fatties-because we have National Holidays devoted to fried dough!  Of course!)  Go get your doughnut on at Krispy Kreme (one free doughnut per customer) or Dunkin Donuts (at participating locations, with purchase of a beverage).  Go with Krispy Kreme…they are such much better.  I still remember watching them being made at the Alexandria location.  There is nothing like a fresh krispy kreme doughnut.  I am so happy there are none close by right now.  I just drooled on my keyboard a little bit…I think there’s a doughnut in my future…maybe at Trois Pommes.  Here’s a list of the best doughnuts by type here in the cit-tay.

It is totes TIME! The Cherry Blossoms are blowing up!

27 04 2009

I’ve got my PERFECT unemployed day planned tomorrow!  A friend who is also *in between employment opportunities* and I will be having a fabulous picnic under the peaking cherry trees at Brooklyn Botanic Garden…until I typed that I didn’t realize how slightly sleazy and internet predator that sounded…le sigh.

It’s like the stars are in alignment!  There’s PERFECT weather on tap tomorrow…Tuesdays are FREE at the Botanic Gardens…the Cherry Blossom map shows that almost ALL of the trees are in FULL bloom, and I STILL don’t have a job!  BRILLIANT!  I feel like I’m finally having the unemployed day I always dreamed about when I was stuck in my windowless office on cold and grey days…when the building had turned the water off so we had to walk two blocks to piss…when the whole city just seemed to be closing in on my little self and throwing way too much shade on my shine…

TO DO: Stalk Cherry Blossom progress at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

30 03 2009

I have promised myself for six years that I will go and see the cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens…and like so many other promises I’ve made to myself over the course of a lifetime, I’ve fallen through my ass and let myself down.  Well, NO MORE.  THIS year I will get to see the cherry blossoms.  I’ve started following them on this Blossom Status map which literally takes the guess work out.  In DC it’s impossible to tell when they are going to bloom, when they are going to fall off the trees, or when the tourists will get word that they have bloomed.  This lovely little map lets me know before I even leave the house!  I also live about three blocks from the blossoms so I almost can’t miss them when I’m walking in the hood.  Sorry to everyone who’s working-but then not sorry because, guess what?  You have a job and that’s kind of an awesome thing right now-BUT I’m super excited for this week!  Spring has ARRIVED and it’s going to be close to 60 degrees ALL WEEK!  I’m going to plant stuff on the roof, finish my spring clean and all will be right with the world!  Oh yeah…and find a job.  Awesome.  But first, I’m going to see the cherry blossoms!

Don’t Forget: TO DO: A Saturday night event you can Afford!

26 03 2009

’cause it’s FREE!  On March 28th at 8:30pm celebrate Lights Off!  People around the world will turn off their lights and go outside to spend quality energy free time with friends, family and neighbors.

I’m excited to see how New Yorkers will celebrate since so few people have outdoor space and it’s really hard to entertain friends in the dark at your apt…send me your thoughts and ideas!  I want to see how people are going to celebrate.  Also, March 28th is a bit of a gamble.  I know it’s ‘spring’ but March can still be SUPER cold here…it might be a little bit of a challenge to pull that off if it’s 32 degrees outside.  It would be really neat if people got together in Central Park…not in the biblical sense but spent that time using a national park and not using energy…but Central Park tends to keep it pretty real after sundown…Anyhoo, the forecast ain’t great (high of 51 with showers) but it’s an easy way to do something for the environment AND save some MONEY!!!  Just do it!
